Autumn Silence at Lago di Braies
To capture this iconic reflection, arrive at least 45 minutes before sunrise; once the sun hits the water, the mirror effect often disappears due to thermal winds. A ultra-wide-angle lens (14-20mm) is essential to fit the entire mountain peak and its full reflection into the frame. The location is the northern shore near the historic boat house, easily accessible from the main parking lot, but note that drones are strictly prohibited here. This is one of the most popular spots in the Dolomites, so expect heavy crowds even at dawn.

Night at Lago di Braies
This iconic perspective faces south toward the Croda del Becco mountain. An ultra-wide lens (14-20mm) is essential here to capture the boats in the foreground while fitting the mountain peak and sky in the frame. While sunrise is notoriously crowded, night photography here offers solitude, though the wooden pier is frequently gated off, requiring composition from the immediate shoreline. Light pollution is relatively low, making it excellent for astrophotography, though late October (when this was taken) is late in the season for the Milky Way core.

Autumn Mooring at Braies
This iconic shot is taken at Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee) in South Tyrol. To capture the water this calm and the boats empty, you must arrive before sunrise, as the rental service opens around 9:00 AM and the lake becomes crowded immediately. A telephoto lens (around 100-130mm) is excellent here to compress the scene, bringing the colorful forest background closer to the boats. The 8-second exposure used here requires a sturdy tripod to smooth out ripples and enhance the reflection. Late October is the prime window for these specific orange and yellow larch colors.
