Tre Cime Reflected

This iconic view is best captured from the area near Rifugio Locatelli (Dreizinnenhütte), specifically around the Laghi dei Piani or smaller seasonal meltwater pools nearby. Sunset is the ideal time, as the last light hits the peaks (Alpenglow) while the foreground remains in shadow, creating depth. A wide-angle lens (14mm-20mm) is essential to include the foreground rocks and the full height of the peaks; get the camera low to the water to maximize the reflection. While the location is very busy during the day, the crowds thin out significantly by sunset, allowing for cleaner compositions. No special permits are required, and tripods are allowed.

Val di Funes Alpenglow
03sunset

Val di Funes Alpenglow

This iconic viewpoint is located along the Magdalenaweg (Panoramaweg) road above the village; parking is limited, so hiking up from the town center is recommended. Late October offers a perfect balance of green grass and yellow trees, but be prepared for high dynamic range scenes as the valley falls into shadow long before the peaks lose light. A focal length around 35mm to 50mm provides the ideal compression to make the mountains loom large behind the church. Respect local farmers by staying strictly on the paved road or designated paths; do not walk into the meadows.

Geroldsee Dawn
04sunrise

Geroldsee Dawn

Sunrise is the essential time to visit this location to capture the side-lighting on the mist and the alpenglow on the Karwendel range. Park in the designated areas in Gerold village (spots are limited) and walk about 10 minutes up the hill to the meadows. Be extremely respectful as this is private farmland; stay on the beaten paths and do not trample the tall grass, as this angers local farmers. A wide-angle lens around 20-24mm is ideal to frame the iconic hut in the foreground while maintaining the grandeur of the mountains. Expect other photographers, especially on weekends, so arrive 45 minutes before sunrise to secure your composition.

Autumn Alpenglow at Ranui
05sunset

Autumn Alpenglow at Ranui

This iconic location in Val di Funes is best visited at sunset to capture the alpenglow on the peaks, while mid-to-late October offers the best fall foliage. Access to the meadow is strictly prohibited to protect the agriculture; you must shoot from the designated viewing platform near the Ranuihof farm or from the roadside fence. A focal length around 35mm to 50mm is ideal to compress the distance between the church and the mountains. Because the valley falls into deep shadow while the mountains remain bright, use a tripod and bracket your exposures or use a graduated ND filter to manage the high dynamic range.
